Take four classical singers, a cellist, a pianist, an accordionist, four percussionists, a hoard of singers, dancers and actors. Put them in a super-size furniture store. Mix them together with an unsuspecting audience. Top with meatballs and add four dates in June for seasoning. Cooking time: 1 hour.

Mammoth Music Theatre is putting on an Opera in IKEA Wembly 2nd, 3rd, 9th & 10th June  @ 7.30 pm!  All parts of the Opera relate to furniture, and will be conducted in stages scattered around the store with guides to lead customers from act to act.  If anyone’s in the area, see if you can get some pictures to share with the rest of us? :-)

See The Flatpack The Opera site and IKEA Wembley’s Web site for details… They will also have specials in the Restaurant to go along with the performance, Yumm!

IKEA named one of the 2009 World's Most Ethical Companies

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009 by Tigratrus

ethics

For three years in a row, 2007, 2008 and 2009,  Ikea was named one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies by the Ethisphere Institute, a research-based international think tank that evaluates more than 10,000 companies to determine winners.

“Ikea has proven to be one of the world leaders in upholding high ethical standards, making it a true standout in its industry, especially as unethical business actions and decisions grab headlines each day,” said Alex Brigham, executive director of the Ethisphere Institute.

The methodology used by the firm includes reviewing a business’s history of ethics, litigation and regulatory infractions, evaluating its investment in sustainable business practices and looking at activities that might improve corporate citizenship.

While there are always individual problems and some folks have had bad experiences, it’s really nice to know that behind the scenes IKEA really does try to live up to their espoused ideals :).

sewingroom

Oh, how I’ve always wanted to put this cabinet to good use!  But any use I could put it to wouldn’t be as good as the use that athomesewing has put it to.  Check out her thread, My IKEA Sewing Room, for all the details.  It’s an amazing room for all you crafters and sewing chicks (and roosters?) out there.

While you’re there, check out our new system for sharing photos – organize your photos into PhotoSets in the galleries, display them in Tabsets in the forums and add notes to them to discuss them in posts.

IKEA US reacts to Swine Flu Hysteria – Closes Smaland

Monday, May 4th, 2009 by Tigratrus

smaland-closed According to a notice posted on the IKEA Baltimore site, IKEA US stores have closed all Smalands by May 1 out of concern for the health and safety of IKEA customers in light of the current Swine Flu / H1N1 Hysteria. See a Google Map with the current state of the swine flu outbreak here.

Bear in mind that on May 1, there were a total of 19 confirmed deaths in Mexico, the origin of the disease, and only 1 death in the US has been reported to date. Each year, approximately 36,000 people die from influenza and yet we hardly worry about washing our hands. Now we’re closing entire child care facilities? In the middle of a recession? And a kitchen event? Have we lost our blue and yellow minds?

IKEA Kitchen Event Extended and IKEA Sofa Event Postponed

IKEA US has postponed the Sofa Event until 5/10 due to…the swine flu! Apparently the factories supplying the stock are located in Mexico and have not been able to produce the necessary sofas and couches to supply the stores for the sale that was due to start on 5/4. The good news is that IKEA US has extended the Kitchen Event until 5/10/2009 – save up to 20% on your IKEA Kitchen. Yay, swine flu!
