During our recent visit to Minnesota for the 4th Annual IKEAFANS ModCon when we had the opportunity to visit our very own Splatgirl’s hot pink design studio, I got to see in person this fabulous Messenger Bag among other Splatgirl Creates creations. Got me to thinking about IKEA fabrics and wondering what else people were doing with them. Certainly there are a world of opportunities for home decor applications, but what other kinds of crafty, fun things are people handcrafting? Also, find out how to get IKEA fabrics as your desktop wallpaper after the jump!
Creative Uses For IKEA Fabrics
There’s no shortage of creative ideas for unique and personalized bags, rolls and …covers made of IKEA fabrics.
Pictured right we have a DPN or crochet hook roll up made of BARNSLIG hippo fabric (also used below for the shopping cart cover in lime green!) sewn by briebeest. A cute, simple project easy enough for a beginner at sewing, but impressive enough to take to your sewing circle.
This blue ‘Birds in the Tree’ totebag, handcrafted from IKEA GUNILLA fabric is available on eBay for the cool price of $28.00 from the Finland Quality Store. It’s lined in DITTE orange fabric to coordinate with the orange dots on the GUNILLA. 100% cotton, washable and versatile, it would be a lovely addition to any purse wardrobe.
Inspired by IKEA
Perhaps my favorite of all (and this is saying something because I am SO NOT AN ORANGE PERSON. Oh, oh, wait! It comes in gray!) is the fantastic handmade fabric called ‘I Wish we had IKEA‘, designed and printed by etsy.com artist skinnylaminx. Says skinny:
I thought it would be fun to share my IKEA wishlist on a tea towel, and I’ve called it “I Wish we had IKEA”. So as you dry the dishes, you can think about your own IKEA shopping list, the next time you’re lucky enough to visit!
“I Wish we had IKEA” is printed in burnt orange water-based ink on natural-toned cotton hopsack. Hopsack is a loose-weave 100% cotton fabric that is very absorbant, and perfect for drying the dishes.

Children’s Textiles
For the under two set, there’s this reversible shopping cart cover offered by PaisleyPineapple over at etsy.com. The brightly colored lime green Barnslig hippo fabric is complemented by the Barnslig blue striped fabric. The cover “features two toy loops and a front elasticized pocket perfect for holding a sippy cup, snacks, or cell phone.” Because every baby needs access to his phone! He’s probably shopping at IKEA with the SwedeShop iPhone app.
