IKEA Gingerbread House Kit, Instructions and Recipe

How to Build an IKEA Gingerbread House

Gingerbread houses, known as Pepparkakshus in Swedish, are a fun and festive way to celebrate the Christmas holidays. Easy to make from a kit or from scratch, gingerbread houses are a surefire way to get the holiday spirit going (and if you need some additional spirit, try making GLOGG to go with it!). Find the IKEA Gingerbread recipe and instructions inside…

Editor’s Note: This is an oldie but goodie! Originally published on December 6, 2010. Enjoy!

Gingerbread House Recipe

2 dl water (~1 US cup)
1 dl molasses (~1/2 US cup)
2 tablespoons of ground cinnamon
1 tablespoon of ground cloves
1 tablespoon of ground ginger
1 teaspoon of ground cardamom
1 teaspoon black pepper
1 tablespoon of baking soda
300 gr butter (~1 US cup + 5 tablespoons)
5 dl sugar (~2 US cups)
1.5 liters flour (~6 US cups)

Mix butter, sugar and syrup. Add spices and baking soda. Then add the water, and when blended, gradually add in the rest of the flour. Let the dough sit over night, wrapped in foil in the fridge.

Gingerbread House Icing Recipe

400 ml powdered sugar (Between 1 1/2 and 1 2/3 US cups)
1 egg white
1 teaspoon white vinegar

Blend ingredients to desired consistency. Make a stiffer icing for attaching gingerbread house pieces together, and a thinner icing for decorating. Fill a pastry bag and pipe icing as in directions to build gingerbread house.

A note about Conversions: 1 dl = approximately 1/2 cup. 1 liter = approximately 4 cups. 100 grams = 3.5 ounces. I’ve added approximate conversions above in bold. Note these are approximate – use your judgement when measuring.
