This year’s IKEA Catalog is the 59th and will print in 28 languages, and in 54 editions.  198 million copies will be printed, making the IKEA Catalog the most widely distributed commercial publication in the world. Over 4000 images of over 2000 products (out of a total 10,000 or so in the whole IKEA Range) grace the  375 pages of the catalog this year.  That’s a long way from the first catalog publication in 1951 which had a run of only 100,000!

The trends for this year’s IKEA Catalog offerings were evident in all the room settings at the IKEA Catalog Launch event in NYC yesterday as well as throughout the pages of the new catalog.  The overarching theme was definitely LOWER PRICES (through HIGHER THINKING), and we saw drastic drops in prices of everything from Children’s IKEA to sofas, bedroom furniture and dining.

2010 IKEA Product Range Trends:

GRAY – This achromatic color shows up everywhere from the new sheepswool cover for the POANG chair to the entire EDLAND bedroom suite which features 18th century Gustavian influences in the sexy curved legs and a carved apron.  See more pictures of GRAY in the 2010 IKEA Product Range

CURVES - Curvy, organic shapes and smooth lines are abundant in fabrics, such as the SARALISA or ELISABET fabrics, or the KAJSA curtains as well as in the lines of furniture (see the beautiful legs of EDLAND above!), new lamps such as LJUSAS SALBO table lamp (pictured left) or the IKEA 365+ BRASA pendant lamp and decorations like the BIGGARO vase and candlestick collection. BOLD GRAPHICS and COLORS – IKEA is not known for shying away from bold colors and graphics and this year, they’ve made it a focus.  The original BLADHULT cover for the KLIPPAN sofa speaks volumes about the trend in this year’s catalog.  Check out children’s textiles in the VITAMINER line as well as bright colors in decorations, such as vases, lamps and cushions.  See more pictures of BOLD GRAPHICS and COLORS in the 2010 IKEA Product Range

WALNUT – Darker woodgrains have been a trend for a few years (NEXUS Black-Brown has been HUGELY popular in the past few years in the Kitchen Range, as was the dark stained Eucalyptus doorstyle, HALLARUM in previous years), but this year, IKEA has turned its focus to walnut.  LACK tables and shelves are offered in walnut as is the BESTA / FASTO line of panels and doors.  Look for walnut stained countertops in the kitchen range this year as well.  See more pictures of WALNUT in the 2010 IKEA Product Range

We saw a little of each trend during the catalog launch in NYC on July 28th. Here’s a little video preview of the launch event:
