dust-mites-in-bed

Here’s something disgusting: the average mattress has 2 million dust mites.  At least 25% of the weight of your pillow is made up of living (and dead!) dust mites.  Ewww!  Even vacuuming, the traditional answer to dust mites (other than sleeping in plastic wrapped bedding), only removes 5-10% of the dust mites in your bed.  Think it’s time to replace your mattress and pillow?!  Suddenly, so do I!

IKEA’s on it! Through Sunday, IKEA US will remove your old mattress for FREE with the delivery of a new IKEA mattress to your home*. Plus, IKEA bedding including duvets, comforters, pillows, and sheets are on sale through 9/20/2009.

IKEA Mattress Range

IKEA’s primary mattress range is SULTAN. You can choose IKEA mattresses in latex, foam or innerspring styles, as well as pillowtops, mattress pads and mattress protectors that can make your chosen mattress more comfortable.

There’s a mattress guide on IKEA’s site (go to Bedroom, then Mattresses, then Mattress Guide on the tabs) that will help you narrow down the choices by walking you through 4 major factors in selecting a mattress:

Sleeping position – supporting your body for the way you typically sleep is of prime importance. Are you a back sleeper? Side sleeper? Stomach sleeper?

Temperature - the material your mattress is made of has a huge impact on how comfortable you are at night. Do you ordinarily feel warm, cool or just right in your bed at night?

Body shape – providing support in the right places for your body style is high on the list of factors. Are you broad in the shoulders or hips? Both? Neither?

Height and Weight – how ‘dense’ your body is based on height and weight will help determine the firmness of the perfect mattress for you.  Heavier people are best supported on a firm mattress, while lighter people often do better on a soft mattress.

I ran through the Mattress Guide and received 4 suggestions – 1 mattress made of latex and foam, 2 spring mattresses (one of which was entirely natural with no latex or foam) and one 100% foam mattress.

IKEA Mattress Reviews

Concerned about quality? Don’t be!  Seriously – this is one area in which you can relax.  First off, with so many choices offered, there’s something for everyone. Mattresses in sizes from twin, full / double, queen and king in prices ranging from $79.99 to $999.99.  There’s even a round mattress!  SULTAN SANDANE – couldn’t you just see this made up as a hamburger?

So, once you’ve narrowed the field of choices down to a few, make like you’re in Beijing, and lie down on the beds that are candidates.  See how they feel. Roll over – get comfy. Don’t be ashamed; apparently some people do this for recreation! If you have a sleeping partner, make sure you’re both on the mattress so you can see how it holds and distributes your combined weight. Don’t get kinky!

What happens if you bring it home, and a month later your back is sore and you know that it’s just not going to work out? IKEA offers a 90 day Love it or Exchange it Policy, so that you can exchange your IKEA mattress one time within 90 days for a more suitable mattress. There’s also a 25-year warranty on SULTAN mattresses.  Still not sure? Check out IKEA Mattresses – Your Thoughts? for real reviews, advice and suggestions about IKEA mattresses from IKEAFANS members.

New Lower Prices

Do I need to mention again how many dust mites are in your pillow? Gah! Get a new one!

New lower prices means that you can pick up some new pillows, sheets and duvet covers plus down comforters for a steal! Traditional wisdom says to have 2 sets of sheets, a winter comforter and a summer-weight comforter, a heavy weight duvet cover for winter months, and a lighter duvet cover for summer.  IKEA’s got comforters at lower prices too, so pick up one of each to be comfy all year long.

You can get away with just one pillow for each sleeper, but make sure it’s the right one. Is it any surprise that IKEA offers pillows in styles suited to your particular sleeping position? Check out the GOSA line for pillows with inserts designed especially for side-sleepers, back-sleepers and stomach-sleepers. Sweet dreams!

*Offer valid for delivery to, and removal from, the same location. New SULTAN mattresses purchased and delivered between now and September 20th, 2009 qualify for FREE mattress removal.  See IKEA for details.

That’s really disgusting, what’s more disgusting is that you had to point out something that I might literally lose sleep over despite the fact that my IKEA bed is pretty new. Thanks a lot!
