Check out what TDPRI member ‘crispy king’ has done with a few IKEA BRODER shelves – he’s made a gorgeous guitar – the Thomspon IKEA Master. Head on over and vote – this is an entry in the $210 Telebuild Contest held at TDPRI.com.  The contest requires that all entries document the building of a guitar for a total of $210 or less by the 11th anniversary of TDPRI.com on the 3rd of May, 2010. This ‘IKEA Master’ has our vote!

Check out all the pics coming up, after the jump!

Building a Guitar out of IKEA Stock

Crispy king used IKEA BRODER shelves to create the base for his guitar, the IKEA Master. It’s built of 3 layers, made of 2 shelves, a neck, some other bits and pieces and a whole lot of blood, sweat and tears. Costs are low:

Wood £10 (IKEA BRODER Shelves)

Neck (when it arrives) £13

Grain Filler £3

Finish £10

Plus miscellaneous other costs, but ultimately under $210. Here’s pics:

This is what crispy king had to say about drilling out the ferrules:

Because my drill press isn’t big enough for this I had to use a hand drill. This is my method. I clamped a straigh (sic) edge to my drill press and glued a cutout of the string-throughs to a piece of MDF. I drill a hole then slide the MDF along the straight edge to the neck hole position. This way I might mess up the distances between the holes a bit, but at least they’ll be in line. I used thick MDF so it will hopefully stop the drill bit wandering while drilling into the body.

Once I have the tempate (sic) made I positioned the bridge onto the body and started off the first and last holes.
I then put a couple of broken drill bits into those holes and then lowered the template on top. Next I drilled middle four holes as deep as I could, moved the broken drill bit into these holes and drilled positions 1 and 6.

Removing the template I drilled holes 1 and 6 all the way through. Then repeated the process on the back.

I’m linking this on the various music, guitar, Fender boards I visit. Very cool. Not a Telecaster body though. Makes you look twice, “Thats a Tele?”
