Ever have trouble with the IKEA Home Planner (formerly known separately as the IKEA Kitchen Planner, the IKEA Bedroom Planner, and so on…)?  Who hasn’t?!?  In our kinder, gentler moments, we refer to it as ‘quirky’. For the past several years, I’ve referred to it as ‘uninstalled.’

All that’s going to change in 2009! To start, the individual planners have been combined into one planner – the all-powerful IKEA Home Planner! No longer do you have to long for a sofa in your kitchen nook – you can have one!  We also know that there will be a new platform - IKEA has signed a 5 year contract with 20-20 Technologies, Inc, ‘the world’s leading provider of computer-aided design, business and manufacturing software solutions tailored for the interior design and furniture industries,’ to use their 3-D Interior Design program for IKEA Home Planning.  And although we aren’t in the position to reveal anything more just yet, there are exciting changes afoot for 2009.

Some things, however, never change.  For years, we’ve had the good fortune of having some very talented, patient IKEA Fans, like DesignDiva, NBeth, and zeuss, who is also the undisputed Google Sketch-Up Queen!), Gloria, dalbrough, Harpy, Zenoforum, DaveoftheCoonties (and so many more!) just to name a few who volunteer their time and talents designing kitchens and putting together furniture plans for their fellow fans.  The incredible thing is that kitchens and entire remodels even, are planned here by IKEA Fans members on a daily basis – for FREE (!!!).

Want free design help?  Use our Kitchen Planning Guide for resources to help you prepare your request.  Submit a plan in the Kitchen Planning or other appropriate forum with

  1. Basic room measurements and locations of doors, windows, openings and utilities,
  2. A Mission Statement or listing of requirements, desires, wants, needs, etc.,
  3. A [Review Request] thread pre-fix,
  4. And little bit of sugar and you’ll likely see comments, suggestions, and maybe whole new plans within a few days’ (sometimes just hours!) time.
  5. Meanwhile, spend a little time reading and commenting on others’ threads for better results! It’s all about giving, after all.

We’ve also had the unique opportunity to connect one of the IKEA Home Planner IT Professionals with IKEA Fans in the IKEA Home Planner Forum to provide one on one tech support and troubleshooting. hadirijan, who is actively working on the IKEA Home Planner in Almhult, Sweden, is patient, informed and persistent in helping find solutions to problems, in troubleshooting bugs in the planner, and in providing advice for everything from installing and uninstalling the software to pushing furniture around. Thanks hadirijan! I can honestly say that people like me really need someone like you.

Thank you to all the IKEA Fans who volunteer their time to help others make their homes as beautiful as they can be through planning and design.  Modifications are a whole ‘nother post!  (DulcineaK, Answer Chick, you know I’m talking to you!)
