IKEA is unveiling the 2012 IKEA PS Furniture Collection in Milan, Italy this week at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair). Available after August 2012 in US stores (more likely mid-October for the entire range to show up in a select group of stores, if history serves) and we’ve got some great overview pics inside. Take a peek!
What is IKEA PS?
Well, it’s IKEA’s Design statement to the furniture world, putting the “focus on cutting edge Scandinavian furniture design without losing sight of what makes IKEA unique – affordable, quality design for the many people.” Each uniquely themed collection represents in furniture an idea – anything from from Democratic Design to Never Ending Stories; each IKEA PS collection captures the spirit of creativity merged with the the practical, functional style that Scandinavia is known for, and the 2012 collection is no exception.

IKEA PS 2012 Facts
This year’s collection contains 46 products by 19 designers. It’s the 7th collection since the first one in 1995 which was a huge success and led to additional collections released every 3 years or so (the notable exception of a 2-year gap between the 2001 and 2003* collections). Some items from each collection have remained, such as the iconic IKEA PS watering can, the IKEA PS tea lights made from recycled fuse housings and don’t forget the Children’s IKEA PS skinny egg-chair – a favorite among the ankle biters around here.
The 2012 collection features products across the furniture range: chairs, tables, lamps, bowls, textiles, pictures and more made from materials like recyclable mattress pocket springs, bamboo, sustainable fabrics like linen, recycled PET plastic, and innovative wood-plastic composites and use LED lighting to support sustainability. Bright primary colors dominate the palette, with black and white creating a base. Watch out later this week for more about our favorites from the 2012 IKEA PS Collection.
*As an interesting side note, 2003 also marked the launch of the Unböring campaign which featured many IKEA PS products under its covers.

Any idea if this collection comes to Australia?
It would be terrific if more of the collection appears in a greater number of stores. The number of items in the Atlanta store was extremely disappointing for the 2009 collection.
