It’s being called Snowmageddon, SNOMG, and now SNOverkill. I’ve got another one for you – SNOTATOS! With IKEAs up and down the eastern seaboard closed due to unprecedented amounts of snow, we have gotten a little bored (and apparently slightly insane). Find out which IKEA stores are closed and which are opening late (and how to make snotatos), after the jump!

How to Make Snotatos
- 10 red or yukon potatoes (2 large, cut in half for the bases, 4 medium and 4 small)
- 1 baby carrot, cut into four pieces and shaped into noses
- 12 rosemary twigs, stripped of needles
- 8 black peppercorns
- toothpicks
Unlike other potato-based snowmen, these are made of boiled potatos, not mashed. Use your peeler to shape the potatoes into the roundish shapes, leaving the bottoms slightly flat. I used 2 larger potatoes for the bottom, and cut them in half. Then I trimmed them to give them a slightly rounded bottom.
Boil the potatoes with salt and pay attention – the smaller potatoes will cook faster than the large ones, and the last thing you want is potato mush. Cool the potatos in a colander under running cold water as you remove them from the pot.
When all the potatos are cooked, set the largest base potatoes on the serving platter (an IKEA 365+ in my case – what else?), and put a toothpick down through the top, leaving part sticking up. Thread the middle potato on top, then insert another toothpick into the middle potato. Secure the top potato on the second toothpick.
Using a spare toothpick, make holes for the arms and insert rosemary twigs stripped of the needles for arms. Likewise, make holes for the carrot nose and the peppercorn eyes and set these into place.
Your snowmen will now be cold – Brrr! Pop them into a double boiler and give them a good steam to reheat before serving. Bon appetit!
