This weekend, September 18-20, IKEA USA* is offering the popular Swedish Meatball plate (6 balls)  for only $1. What a deal! Ordinarily $4.29, IKEA’s swedish meatballs are the single most popular dish served at the big blue cafeteria. Served with cream sauce, a dollop of Lingonberry jam and potatos of some variety (used to be small reds, but lately it’s mashed – BLASPHEME!), this is really a lovely way to lunch while shopping at IKEA. I sure hope that putting them on sale doesn’t mean they’re being discontinued!

Those watching their respective waistlines will be thrilled to know that according to a diagram I’ve seen recently, the IKEA Swedish Meatball has virtually NO CALORIES due to the thin beef veneer that’s applied to the outside of a ‘hollow core of deliciousness.’ (See diagram, top) IKEA developed board-on-frame manufacturing to save on raw materials and to reduce weight in transportation, so it’s no big surprise they’ve applied that manufacturing technology to their most famous of products: the humble meatball.

All hail meatballs!

All kidding aside, here’s the low down on that plate o’meatball deliciousness.  The 6 meatball plate counts for 210 calories, 13 grams of fat, 9 grams of carbohydrates and provides 14 grams of protein.  One tablespoon of the cream sauce will add an extra 30 calories, 1.5 grams of fat and 3 grams of carbohydrates.  Count the lingonberry sauce in for 35 calories, and 8 carbs, but it’s fat free! Skip the potatoes and pick up a non-fat frozen vanilla yogurt for only 100 calories on the way out. There you have it – an IKEA meatball meal for only 375 calories. Just don’t lick the plate.
