IKEA UK iPhone App: Feedback Requested 
CakeGroup, the media agency recently selected by IKEA to handle their UK marketing, has released a statement regarding the new iPhone app for IKEA UK which is available for FREE Download through the Apple iTunes store. The iPhone application is little more than an online catalog with the ability to zoom and view thumbnails of pages, but hey – who hasn’t wanted an IKEA catalog in her purse from time to time? You can also search for a page number (no keywords) and flip quickly through pages through standard previous/next navigation – handy, but not really a showstopper.
CakeGroup says that IKEA plans to improve the application, but oddly, they’ve stated, “only in conjunction with customers who choose to download it.” Huh? Like, if I don’t find out about it NOW and download it, I won’t be able to get upgrades in the future? That can’t be right…

Since you can zoom (see last image above for zoomed page), the Index becomes a handy way to find the page of the item you’re looking for specifically – then you can search to find it. Still, a little too much like the paper version of the catalog and not enough interactivity to really be called an app.
Give iPhone Feedback to IKEA
IKEA, through CakeGroup, is asking for suggestions on improvements. Customers have thus far asked for GPS for instore navigation (no more getting lost in the aisles!), ecommerce shopping solutions, and augmented reality.

IKEA’s Mobile Web and iPhone apps
IKEA’s been doing a lot in the mobile space lately, and I have word from a friendly bird in Sweden that IKEA has plans to globalize their efforts rather than launching apps for individual countries as we’ve seen so far with the issue of an app in Spain, and reportedly, one in Italy. I also have it under good authority that IKEA US is developing ’something’ but as yet I don’t have details. You’ll be the first to know!

You may not have spotted it, but on November 23th, 2009 Ikea Italia released in the AppStore the Italian app. It is not really good as it should be, specially on finding informations on the catalog, but it does a lot more things than the UK one reviewed here:
- Offline Italian catalog, with the possibility to look at the description, tapping, of some of the products (you can also search through the catalog by product name -not always works…)
- You can find the Italian store nearest to you (based on geolocalization)
- You can read the Italian monthly offers reserved to Ikea Family card owners (internet connection required)
- You can watch videos posted on the Italian Youtube Ikea channel (internet connection required)
- You can chat with “virtual Anna”, the online assistant :D (internet connection required)
