Unbelievable low price on IKEA LACK side table
IKEA has done the unbelievable – they have dropped the price on the LACK side table all the way down to $7.99 in the US. Last year’s price was $12.99, and when the table was first introduced in 1985? The price was $24.99.
Lower Prices through Smart Thinking
Smarter production methods, materials usage and packaging has allowed IKEA to reduce the price through ‘Smart Thinking’, a key principal of their campaign in the 2010 catalog year. At the 2010 catalog launch, they had a sawn open example of the LACK table for us to see the interior like in the picture below. One thing we noticed is that they don’t finish the undersides anymore – saving more in paint and production costs.
Board-on-frame Production

Our LACK range of furniture uses a production technique known as ‘board on frame’. Board on frame is a lightweight sandwich construction consisting of a particle board frame with a recycled cardboard honeycomb structure in its centre and thin hardboard surfaces.
Using board on frame techniques allows IKEA to minimize raw materials usage, reduce production costs and lower the impact on the environment by improving shipping. Flat packing allows the LACK side table to be shipped for less because it’s light and compact.
More savings throughout the 2010 IKEA catalog. Stay tuned this week as we talk more about what’s new for 2010 in the catalog! Read more about Trends in the 2010 IKEA Catalog or get a Sneak Preview of the 2010 IKEA Kitchens Catalog.
