Petition IKEA to Go Green with EmbraceChange09 Campaign

A petition has been started at Twitter to get IKEA to go green with their ‘mock motorcade’ which is part of their EmbraceChange09 campaign. Later this week, IKEA plans to unleash a limousine and 2 Suburban SUVs to troll around Washington D.C. burning fuel while promoting the EmbraceChange09 campaign (see IKEA decorates the Oval Office and EmbraceChange09 - Change is Coming! for more information on the campaign).

Let’s face it folks, IKEA is brilliant when it comes to creating campaigns that garner attention, but this part of the EmbraceChange09 campaign (which also includes an online planner that allows peeps to redecorate the Oval Office, and a mock Oval Office set up in Union Station in D.C., in addition to billboards, and ‘wrapped’ buses) is ill-advised at best.

Assuming the limousine gets 12 mpg (2009 Cadillac from GreenCars.com) and the 2 Suburban SUVs get 10-14 mg (Chevy Suburban 5.3 L from GreenCars.com) in the city will be on the streets for 8 hours each (what, you think about 20 miles per hour*?), we can guesstimate that each will burn about 13.33 gallons of fuel. Multiply that by 3 vehicles and 2 days and you’ve got a total of 79.98 gallons of fuel burned! Not so much green, IKEA!

Compare that to the fuel-efficient Prius - 3 vehicles X 2 days @ 48mpg = 20 gallons burned. Or the turbocharged SmartCar ForTwo (check out the SmartCarofAmerica Forums!) that would only use 12 gallons!

Come on, IKEA - if 2009 is about change, then let’s break out of the idea that a MOCK motorcade requires gas guzzling vehicles to have an impact.

*We’re not so good with the maths, but we’ll gladly hear other estimations of fuel use in the city!
