In a flash application what could only be simultaneously described as both creative genius and BIZARRO with a capital EVERYTHING, IKEA UK introduces us to the IKEA PS Collection via Seed World (NSFW Warning: Music begins playing automatically, but surprisingly I found it rather pleasant – turn it off in lower right corner).  Click here to Visit Seed World: Never Ending Design aka the IKEA PS Collection.

I especially like these little guys who will actually play their little musical instruments for you as a reward for hearing about the design process behind the SVARVA lamps, floor and table. The entire presentation of Seed World is both informative and hysterical, but yikes! Imagine the costs associated with developing it?  Perhaps it will be award winning.

IKEA PS Collection: It’s all about stories

The IKEA PS Collection, according to IKEA, is all about stories:

Stories about small, fragile, growing ideas. Stories about our roots, the beauty of imperfection and about empowering people. Stories about minimizing our impact on the environment and increasing our responsibility for our world. Stories about design that is more than just design.

It is put out every few years and the story this year is that IKEA US only going to offer the PS Collection in limited markets: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York. What no Washington D.C.?  It’s ok though – personally, I’m going to be a while digesting and making sense of Seed World.

Although certainly cool in the many creative ways and engaging no doubt, how does it empower the IKEA customers?  If the stories are about empowering people I’d like to see as much effort and IKEA resources poured into IKEA communities like the one here at IKEAFANS where real life stories are shared every day by over 110,000 members. Ok, off the soapbox, and on to the IKEA PS Collection!
