Adel Medium Brown Kitchen

Our Adel MB IKEA Kitchen! We gutted the entire thing, raised the lowered-soffit ceiling, and put in Adel Medium Brown cabinets.

DH finished the entire job (demo to installation) in 2 weeks. The granite took another couple weeks, but we used plywood as countertops for that time and it was fine. Then DH did the toekick, and has re-tiled the floors.

Here we are a year later, and we still need to do the trim on the plywood underneath the granite. I really wish IKEA sold that stuff - we'd already have it done by now. Or I really wish we would've gotten the double-eased edge for the granite, but that would've been much more expensive. The cabinet on the left side of the breakfast bar (to the left of the chairs) is a cabinet with two doors (24"?) - they face out into the dining room (otherwise it would've just been filler). The cabinet that is the rest of the breakfast bar is the cabinet with 2 big drawers (for pots & pans - LOVE it!) and 2 small drawers above (for pot holders & cooking spoons). There is an inch or two between the two cabinets there, and DH filled it with some spare stuff (sorry, I don't know exactly what).

When we were planning the kitchen, it was so hard to know which cabinets we would like, b/c I couldn't think of what might fit into those cabinets. I really appreciated the pics here with the doors open, so I could visualize what would go inside. So... here are some pics of them inside. To the left of the oven, we have a cabinet with 2 shelves. I keep my Pyrex in there. DH rigged an extra shelf in there, vertically, so I can store my cutting boards and stones! Then a 90 degree corner cabinet - we have installed only the top lazy susan, to take advantage of all of the storage space below! On the lazy susan, I keep my mixing bowls and serving bowls, then on the bottom I keep my mixer, ice cream maker, George Foreman, popcorn maker, some serving platters, etc. This pic is a bit messy, but it gives you a visual so I hope it's helpful. I'm amazed at how much I can fit in here!

The next wall has the dishwasher and the kitchen sink. For the base for the kitchen sink, I believe we used a 36" cabinet - we put drawer fronts up top, and doors on the bottom. We intended to do drawers at the bottom and a shelf over that, but we didn't like that configuration once we installed it (and there wasn't quite enough space for all the plumbing), so we went with just normal storage and are very happy. The fake drawers give it a nice look - once again, if we were here for longer, I would've bribed DH into making those tip-out things to hold small things.

There was an extra 4" of space to be filled to the right of the sink cabinet. If we were going to live here for a long time, I would've bribed DH into putting something cool there (I saw some neat ideas on this board for that area!), but since it's going to be a rental in just a few years, we just stuck some extra board there and it looks good.

The last wall has the long (straight) corner cabinet which is nice, though I wish we had more room for the real (90 degree) corner cabinet. It has a drawer on top, which I love. Here's a pic of the lazy susan part - it really is just wasted space, IMHO. We mounted the upper lazy susan high, so it's a shallow area, which fits my vitamins & such very well. And the lower lazy susan is where I keep the dish towels & miscellaneous. I've piled some things in the corner b/c they fit nicely there. But truly, I don't love this cabinet - it's a whole lot of space that really could be better used. We would've done the cool sliding shelves that I've seen here on this board, but again this is going to be a rental and DH didn't want to invest a whole lot more time than he needed to.

Next to that are a 15" cabinet (one drawer, one door - love it). And then an 18" cabinet with all drawers (love love it! - the bottom drawer is deeper and holds my FoodSaver, storage bags, & rolls of wax paper & aluminum foil, etc.).

And then there's the clunky fridge (couldn't really find a better place to put it in this square kitchen). (Ignore the mess of magnets.)

I think one of my favorite things for this kitchen is the deep drawers for which I bought dividers. The dividers keep my pan lids where they need to be, they keep my FoodSaver upright so there's still lots of room for other things, they keep my ziplock boxes upright and locked in. They're just fabulous!

I know that we don't talk a whole lot about the upper cabinets, b/c the lower ones are so much fun! But I just wanted to add my thoughts on upper cabinets.

I really love the corner cabinet - I keep all of my wine glasses on the first shelf, then all of our coffee mugs and teacups on the second shelf, and then misc. stuff on the higher 3rd shelf. I don't find it hard to access - and I do find that it stores a whole lot of things that otherwise would've taken up a lot of shelfspace in another cabinet.

I'm not fond of our 12" upper cabinet. It was our only choice, considering the spacing of the cabinets with the oven, etc., so it's better to have it rather than nothing. But it's a bit too narrow to be utterly useful. My spices and such are very crowded. I do have a spice organizer shelf, and it helps just a bit, but things still get knocked over when I have to grab a spice. Here's a pic:

Anyways, thank you all so much for your help. We wouldn't have this fabulous kitchen, which we absolutely LOVE, if it wasn't for you: your kindness, generosity, and wonderful advice!
